Result Presentation

Through the previous analysis, the team proposed eight feasible solutions from three perspectives. In this page, the advantages, disadvantages and the effect of solving problems on connection, crowding and economy will be discussed.

Crowding

A: Extend 125th St down to Lexington Av through 96th St

B: Connect Steinway St in Queens down to 21st St

Connectivity

C: Connect Steinway St turning north to 125th Street through Astoria Blvd

D: Extend the 2nd Ave subway up to Lexington Av then west to 63rd St

E: Extend Franklin Ave S south to Church Ave, north to Myrtle Ave

To assess the connectivity, the team use three index: ratio of income to poverty level, Population of people older than 65, and the number of people taking public transportation. In the pictures, poor areas are positively correlated with senior-age areas, but negatively correlated with transportation areas. 

In west Manhattan, north Brooklyn and northwestern Queens, the densities of travelers and the poor are high, which means these areas have higher demand for public transportation.

To assess the economic development, the team use three index: number of floors, building area, and assessed total value in each neighborhoods. In the pictures, all three index are radially centered on Manhattan but with different radius. 

Throughout Manhattan, the building density, number of floors and the total value is high. It means that there is more demand for public transportation in areas not covered by subways in the west and east of Manhattan. Meanwhile, the economy of North Brooklyn and Northwest Queens is also relatively developed. Compared with Manhattan which is fully covered by subway, the construction of subways in these areas can relieve the pressure and connect Brooklyn and Queens.

In evaluating our hypotheses, we define a score of 1-3 for each of the following criteria as follows:

1 - Does not perform highly on most metrics analyzed.

2 - Performs well on some or most metrics, might have other limitations such as being a longer or redundant route.

3 - High performance on nearly every metric measured.

Scores above were chosen based on close work with the data and analysis of the visual outputs produced.
